A Consensual Qualitative Study on the Supervisee¡¯s Perspectives of Good Music Therapy Supervision

Abstract
This study was conducted to look into the supervisee¡¯s perspectives of good music therapy supervision, the essential components of music therapy education and training. 7 music therapists with sufficient experiences as the sepervisee were interviewed and the collected data were analyzed using the consensual qualitative research method. As a result, 5 domains, including ¡®motivation to receive supervision,¡¯ ¡®the supervisor¡¯s professional competences,¡¯ ¡®the supervisee¡¯s efforts,¡¯ and ¡®the supervisee¡¯s changes,¡¯ along with 24 categories were generated. According to the cross-analysis, the supervisee receives music therapy supervision to promote actual intervention skills and obtain individualized supervisory feedback. It is general components of the good music therapy supervision that the supervisor has adequate insights and clinical competences, the supervisory relationship is formed based on respect, empathy, support, and mutual trust, the supervisee makes efforts to take the supervisor¡¯s feedback and apply it in the sessions, and finally the supervisee¡¯s professional development is promoted. This research will enhance understandings of good music therapy supervision and provide useful information on music therapy education and training.
